monitoring

Marine Scotland Science (MSS) undertakes a wide range of monitoring covering many aspects of the Scottish marine ecosystem.

Monitoring is undertaken in Scottish Inshore Waters, using networks of volunteers and automatic recording equipment, as well as in Scottish Offshore Waters, using the MSS research vessels MRV Alba na Mara and MRV Scotia.

Marine Scotland Science also participates national monitoring programmes, such as:

  • UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy (UKMMAS)
  • UK Marine Environmental Change Network (MECN)
  • UK Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN)

This group provides published data from monitoring these activities. For many activities, there are national or international standards for how the monitoring is undertaken.

Temperature and Salinity from CTD Data on the Fair Isle-Munken Section

This data set of CTD and/or STD profiles at stations on the Fair Isle-Munken (FIM) hydrographic section has been collected on cruises under many different projects and programmes undertaken by Marine Scotland, the Faroe Marine Research Institute and the University of Hamburg since 1981. After initial quality assurance by the data originator, the individual CTD/STD profiles at stations on the section have been grouped together to form sections from Shetland to the Faroe Islands, at specific time intervals. Where stations were skipped or sections incomplete, a fill value has been applied.
