Archive

Marine Scotland deliver data and reports through the portal, and assigns Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) to each published dataset. Once a DOI is created, it will remain on the site for reference information for as long as the site remain operational.
However, from time to time, we may update a published dataset to include more up to date information, or remove any potential errors in reported data. When we do this, the dataset will be released as a new dataset, with a new DOI assigned. To avoid confusion, we will then move any previous versions of the dataset to this Archived.
Hence, the archive group is for records that have more recent and updated information in other groups. As such, we always recommend to locate the more up to date resource.

Salmon and Sea Trout fishery statistics: 2017 Season - reported catch and effort by method

Please note this dataset has now been updated, and is available on doi: 10.7489/12206-1. The original material is retained by Marine Scotland, and is available on request, but we recommend updating references and using the updated dataset instead.

The time series for fishery data runs from 1952 to the most recently published season. The data are the summations of reports from individual fisheries. No attempt has been made to correct for non-returns or incomplete information held in the register of proprietors and occupiers.
Data files for the net fisheries contain effort data,we have no comprehensive time series of fishing effort information associated with the rod & line fishery.
Fixed engine effort is summarised as median number of traps operated within a given district in any month.
Net and coble effort is summarised as median number of crews operated within a given district in any month.
Fishery data are provided at the finest geographical (fishery district) and time (month) scales consistently available. Fishery districts correspond either to a single river catchment together with adjacent coast or to groups of neighbouring river catchments and associated coastline. Districts are further aggregated into Regions (Collecting the Marine Scotland Salmon and Sea Trout Fishery Statistics Topic Sheet #67, http://www.gov.scot/Topics/marine/Publications/TopicSheets/tslist) and Scottish Marine Regions. Districts are characterised by Name, District ID and Report Order.
Ordering the data with respect to “Report Order” sorts the Districts spatially. Districts are ordered counter-clockwise starting with the Tweed as Report Order 1. The categories by which sea trout data have been reported have varied through the time series (Topic Sheet #67.) Finnock catches have been reported since 2004.Finnock are sea trout which have spent less than a year at sea and making their first return to fresh water. They may also be known as whitling or herling. Catches of farmed salmon and grilse have been reported since 1994.
