Archive

Marine Scotland deliver data and reports through the portal, and assigns Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) to each published dataset. Once a DOI is created, it will remain on the site for reference information for as long as the site remain operational.
However, from time to time, we may update a published dataset to include more up to date information, or remove any potential errors in reported data. When we do this, the dataset will be released as a new dataset, with a new DOI assigned. To avoid confusion, we will then move any previous versions of the dataset to this Archived.
Hence, the archive group is for records that have more recent and updated information in other groups. As such, we always recommend to locate the more up to date resource.

This dataset and associated Shiny App was developed to allow users to visualise quality controlled data collected under the Temperature Monitoring Network (SRTMN; https://www2.gov.scot/Topics/marine/Salmon-Trout-Coarse/Freshwater/Monit...) and other collaborative projects, at either national or catchment scales. A range of temperature summary metrics have been generated for each of the sites, from daily maximum, mean or minimum river temperatures depending on the metrics selected. Metrics are only generated where data is available for >95% of the time period. Users should familarise themselves with the 'Metrics' and 'How to use data' pages of the associated Shiny App for details on how each of the metrics are calculated and how they should be interpreted.

SRTMN sites are not a random sample of locations across Scottish rivers. Instead they were strategically chosen to cover a wide environmental and geographic range to allow statistical models to be developed. This means that sites often have unusual combinations of environmental characteristics (e.g. high altitude and short distance to coast) that make them useful in this context, however, they are not representative of Scottish rivers more generally. Consequently, although maps and boxplots of national and catchment summary metrics are provided, care should be taken in making broader inferences. To extrapolate from SRTMN sites to Scotland's rivers more generally requires the use of complex spatio-temporal river temperature models which can make predictions across the full river network.

Data Dictionary

Optimal salmon growth - Number of days where mean daily river temperature is above 16 degrees (optimal growth of juvenile salmon given unlimited food resources)
Max salmon growth - Number of days where observed mean daily temperatures exceed 22·5 degrees (maximum temperature for growth of juvenile salmon given unlimited food resources)
Min salmon growth - Number of days where observed mean daily temperature is below 6 degrees (minimum temperature for growth of juvenile salmon given unlimited food resources)
Optimal trout growth - Number of days where mean daily temperature is above 13.5 degrees (optimal growth of juvenile trout given unlimited food resources)
Max trout growth - Number of days where mean daily temperature is above 19.5 degrees (maximum temperature for juvenile growth of trout given unlimited food resources)
