monitoring

Marine Directorate undertakes a wide range of monitoring covering many aspects of the Scottish marine ecosystem.

Monitoring is undertaken in Scottish Inshore Waters, using networks of volunteers and automatic recording equipment, as well as in Scottish Offshore Waters, using the MSS research vessels MRV Alba na Mara and MRV Scotia.

Marine Scotland Science also participates national monitoring programmes, such as:

  • UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy (UKMMAS)
  • UK Marine Environmental Change Network (MECN)
  • UK Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN)

This group provides published data from monitoring these activities. For many activities, there are national or international standards for how the monitoring is undertaken.

Aberdeen Bay Telemetry Dataset, 2017-2021

This dataset contains the cleaned and standardised data used to support an R Shiny dashboard for exploring acoustic telemetry data from diadromous fish monitored in and around Aberdeen Bay. The dashboard provides summary information on tagged fish, detection activity, receiver locations, observed movements, individual fish tracks, sensor data and suspected predation events. It combines study-array detections with validated detections from external receiver networks and links detections back to fish and transmitter metadata.

The associated cleaned data files are:

Tags.csv – cleaned tagging metadata, including study year, species, acoustic transmitter identifiers, physical fish identifiers, release location, release date/time and release coordinates. Multiple transmitter IDs may be associated with the same physical fish, with tag_serial_number used to link those transmitter records back to the individual fish.

Detections_Study_Array.csv – cleaned acoustic detections recorded on the Aberdeen Bay study receiver array, including fish/tag identifiers, species, receiver/station information, detection date/time and receiver coordinates.

Physical_Fish_Detection_Status.csv – fish-level summary indicating whether each tagged physical fish was subsequently detected after release.

Study_Array_Detection_Rates_By_Species.csv – year- and species-level summaries of fish deployed, fish subsequently detected and associated detection rates.

Study_Array_Summary_By_Species.csv – additional year- and species-level summary statistics for detections within the study array.

Study_Receiver_Locations.csv – receiver metadata and summarised receiver activity, including receiver IDs, station names, coordinates, first and last detections, detection counts and numbers of physical fish detected.

External_Receiver_Detections_Validated.csv – validated detections of study fish recorded on receivers outside the main Aberdeen Bay study array, including receiver/station information, date/time and geographic coordinates.

External_Receiver_Validated_Summary.csv – summary information derived from the validated external receiver detections.

Sensor_Data_Calibrated.xlsx – cleaned sensor datasets used to explore fish depth, temperature and potential predation events. The workbook includes calibrated temperature/depth observations, fish-level predation information and predation summaries.

The Shiny application derives additional working datasets from these files, including physical-fish metadata, consolidated receiver coordinates, receiver visits, movement segments and individual fish routes. These derived objects are used to visualise movement between receivers while retaining the distinction between individual acoustic transmitters and physical fish.

The data were originally collected as part of acoustic telemetry studies investigating the migration and habitat use of Atlantic salmon and sea trout in the River Dee, Aberdeen Harbour and Aberdeen Bay. This work is described in Migration of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) Smolts and Post-Smolts from a Scottish East Coast River and River and coastal marine habitat use and the continuum of migration strategies by brown trout (Salmo trutta) smolts from the River Dee (Aberdeenshire). The project was supported by the Dee District Salmon Fishery Board.

Tagging, acoustic detection, receiver-location and sensor data from these studies were cleaned, standardised and combined to create the datasets underlying the Aberdeen Bay R Shiny dashboard. The processed data are used to present summaries of tagged fish and detection rates, receiver locations, fish movements and individual tracks, and temperature, depth and predation sensor information.
