Fisheries

Marine Scotland manages quota for fish stocks and all inshore fisheries within the 12 nautical mile territorial water limit. It is also responsible for controlling the activities of fishing vessels and fishing effort (days spent at sea) in the North Sea, west of Scotland and Faroese waters.
In this section, citable data and reports relevant to fishing activities will be added.

CodSELect - using light to improve cod selectivity in North sea Nephrops trawl gears - Behavioural aquarium tank trials

This dataset contains all the laboratory tank trial data from the CodSELect project which aims to support North Sea Nephrops fishers with a new technical measure to reduce the capture of cod and maintain catch of their target species, which would allow improvements in sustainable catching, reduce discards and ultimately lead to a healthier, more sustainable UK fishing and seafood sector.
There are seven datasets in total, 6 for cod and one for saithe measuring behavioural responses to a range of different artificial light parameters including blue, green, red and white constant light or strobing light with a frequency of 1 Hz at 5 or 50%. The distance of the fish from the light at set timepoints throughout the trial was used as the unit of measure and the light was generated using LED light pods and a coiled 20m length of fibre optic cable. All laboratory tank trials were carried out in the Marine Directorates aquarium facilities in Aberdeen.

CodSELect originated from previously observed behaviour of cod in a laboratory tank trial, completed by Marine Directorate (MD) as part of the Scottish Government, where cod showed a negative phototactic response to blue and green artificial light. CodSELect will investigate fish behaviour in relation to artificial light in a further series of tank trials measuring behavioural responses to a range of different artificial light parameters including blue, green, red and white constant light or strobing light with a frequency of 1 Hz at 5 or 50%.
The tank trial work feeds into two sea trials investigating if the addition of artificial light to the bottom panel of a trawl gear would modify the natural behaviour of cod, to stay low down in the trawl where they remain relatively inactive, by encouraging cod to swim up, increasing encounter rates with a Square Mesh Panel (SMP) positioned above and subsequently increase escape attempts of cod.
