Science of salmon stocking: scientific considerations in stocking policy development for river managers

Scottish Marine and Freshwater Science Report Volume 14 No 3

This report is a review of the science around the topic of stocking of Atlantic salmon into freshwater. Scientific understanding of risks and benefits of stocking is reviewed, and stocking approaches described following established best practices. The report provides an overview that brings together the science behind the various considerations needed to be taken prior to and following stocking, with a view to aiding design of salmon management strategies that balance risks and benefits within a broad policy framework.
